Marc Bekoff on Rewilding our Hearts: Building Pathways of Compassion and Coexistence

Marc-Bekoff-and-a-wolf_edited-1-1-300x300.jpg

In wildlife conservation work, rewilding refers to habitat restoration and the creation of corridors between preserved lands to allow declining populations to rebound. Marc Bekoff, one of the world’s most engaging animal experts and activists (he worked alongside leading writers and activists including Jane Goodall, Peter Singer, and PETA cofounder Ingrid Newkirk), here applies this to human attitudes.

He argues that unless we start rewilding ourselves, becoming profoundly reconnected to nature and fundamentally shifting our consciousness, our conservation efforts will have limited impact. As we become re-enchanted with the world, we dissolve artificial boundaries and truly connect with both nature and ourselves.

Traci Slatton & Sabin Howard, the Art of Life

Traci Slatton

Traci Slatton

A rare excerpt from "The Power of We," Maryanne's show with her husband David Raynal, interviewing husband-and-wife team Traci Slatton and Sabin Howard on their collaboration The Art of Life, that reads like a novel and looks sumptuous.

Writer and healer Traci surveys figurative sculpture from the earliest times to the present and details the work of contemporary master Sabin Howard. Sabin creates sculptures of the human figure that embody heroism and strength and inspire us to be our own best selves. His life-size or larger bronzes express human feelings--anger, eros, being armored, being open, courage--and our bodies “get” the feelings in a way that is beyond language. Check out the rotating slideshow on his website.

We dare you to keep from smiling and feeling larger and happier when you look at his man and woman with their arms outstretched! Join for a candid talk on how two artists manage marriage and how to give our passionate best to each other, be true to ourselves, and give our gifts to humanity.

Mary O'Malley on The Gift of Our Compulsions

Mary_oMalley-300x300.jpg

To some degree, we are all compulsive: think overworrying, overworking, overeating, alcohol/drug abuse. When we try to control these behaviors, they control us. They thrive in reaction. They heal in response. They won’t let go until they teach us how to engage with them, giving the attention and the compassion they need to heal. In the light of our compassionate attention, says Mary O'Malley, not only do our compulsions lose their power over us, they become a doorway into the healing we long for.
